It opens with a drum, not a menu
The evening begins with the interactive djembe session at 6:30pm, before anyone eats. Guests sit in a circle with a drum each and are taught the basic sounds and rhythms of the instrument together. It is a deliberate piece of staging: a room of strangers who have just made a lot of noise together sits down to dinner in a different mood than one that walked straight to a table. Fourteen dishes, in sequence
Dinner is a set menu of fourteen dishes rather than a choice of mains. It starts with Cape Malay cooking — the spiced, slow-cooked tradition that belongs to Cape Town itself — and works its way north through the continent, which the restaurant sums up as a journey from Table Mountain to Timbuktu. The dishes are small and arrive in a long run, so the experience is one of breadth rather than a single centrepiece plate. The specific dishes change with the season and the kitchen.
The performance runs through the meal
Rather than a show after dinner, drummers, dancers and singers work the room while you eat, and tall Mali-style rod puppets move between the tables. The effect is closer to a party with a menu than a dinner with a floor show attached, and it is the reason most reviewers describe the evening as loud and communal rather than a quiet meal out. This is a restaurant on a city street, not a lodge in the bush or a purpose-built cultural village outside town — worth knowing if you are picturing something rural.
How the night ends
The evening builds rather than tapers. Most nights finish with dancing and drumming rather than a slow coffee, and the whole thing runs about three and a half hours door to door once the transfer is counted.
